Until two weeks ago… I didn’t know Jimmie Nicol existed. My daughter, Morgan, and I watched an old documentary about THE BEATLES. I never knew, back in 1964, that Ringo Starr got sick and was temporarily replaced by a guy named Jimmie Nicol. Here are a few interesting facts:
Jimmie Nicol went from relative obscurity to worldwide fame and back again in the space of a fortnight.
Nicol thought his time with THE BEATLES would boost his career, but instead found that the spotlight moved away from him once Starr returned to the group.
Nicol reflected: "The day before I was a BEATLE, girls weren't interested in me at all. The day after, with the suit and the BEATLE cut, riding in the back of the limo with John and Paul, they were dying to get a touch of me. It was very strange and quite scary."
Nicol played a total of eight shows until Starr returned to the group in Australia, on 14 June. He was unable to say "goodbye" to THE BEATLES however, as they were still asleep when he left, and he did not want to disturb them.
Nicol later said, "Standing in for Ringo was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Until then I was quite happy earning thirty or forty pounds a week. After the headlines died, I began dying too."
In 1988 it was rumored that Jimmie Nicol had died but an article in 2005 confirmed that he was still alive and living as a recluse in London.

Two Random Things
1.) Mice! I've never had a problem with mice, live and let live has been my mice-to-human motto.
Until I put up a shed. Last year the little bastards built a nest in my grill. IN my grill. When I took it out of the shed and opened the lid, the entire thing was overflowing with grass/string/poop and other fluffy stuff. Six mice jumped out of it as we cleaned it.
Okay... I got over that... but the other day my lawn tractor wouldn't start. Sure, every time I started it I'd see some mice run out from beneath it, big deal. But when it wouldn't start and I was checking over the engine... I found another nest. INSIDE the engine. When I changed the oil filter, a mouse corpse fell out with a thunk. Now I have to figure out a way to get it to a shop to get fixed.
Damn Mice!!!!
2.) Often times, I'm asked about my love of eyeballs. I used to think it came from the old paperback cover of one of my all time favorite books - NIGHT SHIFT by Stephen King. But I discovered something the other day that may have influenced my eyeball infatuation as well.
Back in the late 70s, I was a HUGE Bay City Rollers fan. HUGE! (Until they resorted to that Saturday morning TV show. Ugh!) Anyway, I was showing my 14 year old daughter the video for S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT and discovered something that may explain my obsession.
On a side note, after I played the song for my daughter, she said, "Oh! That's what they're spelling!" Good Lord, what is she learning in school.
